Question 1

Are dogs allowed at Lands End?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lands End is listed as a voice-control area in the GGNRA 2025 Superintendent's Compendium, meaning dogs may be off-leash (under voice and sight control) or on-leash throughout the Lands End area, including the Coastal Trail, Sutro Baths, and overlooks. The NPS defines voice control as the dog being within earshot and eyesight of the owner and responding immediately to commands.

Question 2

Is Lands End off-leash for dogs?

Accepted Answer

Yes, under voice control. The GGNRA 2025 Superintendent's Compendium explicitly names Lands End in its list of San Francisco voice-control dog walking areas. Dogs must be within earshot and eyesight of their handler and respond immediately to commands. On clifftop sections near exposed drop-offs, leashing is strongly recommended for safety.

Question 3

What are the best trails at Lands End for dogs?

Accepted Answer

The Coastal Trail at Lands End runs 1.5+ miles through coastal cypress groves with dramatic Pacific views, passing Mile Rock Beach overlooks and the ruins of the USS Frank Buck. The trail connects to Sutro Baths at the south end and to Baker Beach via Presidio trails. The El Camino del Mar connector reaches the Legion of Honor. Dogs may be off-leash under voice control throughout.

Question 4

Can I take my dog to Sutro Baths at Lands End?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Sutro Baths ruins area falls within the GGNRA Lands End voice-control zone per the 2025 Superintendent's Compendium. Dogs may be voice-controlled or on-leash. The terrain is uneven with rocky tidal areas — use caution near ocean edges and keep dogs away from unstable ruins sections.

Question 5

Where do I park for Lands End?

Accepted Answer

The Lands End Lookout parking area is at 680 Point Lobos Avenue, San Francisco. Parking is free. The lot fills on sunny weekends — arrive before 9:30 AM. Overflow parking is along El Camino del Mar. Muni buses 38 and 38R stop near Cliff House for transit access.

Question 6

Is Lands End difficult terrain for dogs?

Accepted Answer

The main Coastal Trail is moderate — packed dirt and gravel with some uneven rocky sections and elevation changes. Exposed clifftop sections have wooden staircases and narrow paths. Smaller dogs and puppies may find some sections challenging. On-leash is recommended near cliff edges regardless of voice-control status.

Question 7

What is the best time to visit Lands End with a dog?

Accepted Answer

Morning visits (7–10 AM) offer the best parking, fewest crowds, and calmer wind. Clear days (September–November) provide the most spectacular ocean and bridge views. Summer mornings are often foggy. The cypress grove sections are beautiful year-round. Allow 1–2 hours for the main trail loop.
