Are dogs allowed at Point Reyes National Seashore?

Permitted beach areas: Limantour Beach southeast section (approx. 2 miles from the parking lot), Kehoe Beach north of the trail, and Point Reyes/Great Beach from the North Beach parking lot south to the historic Navy installation. The Tomales Bay west-side beaches within the National Seashore have been closed to pets since May 30, 2023 per NPS policy. All other Seashore trails and beaches are closed to dogs. The park is dog-restricted, not dog-friendly.

Can I hike trails with my dog at Point Reyes?

Within Point Reyes National Seashore itself, only the Kehoe Beach Trail (0.6 miles, flat) and the paths within the Niman Ranch/Commonweal area allow dogs. Bear Valley Trail, Divide Meadow, Palomarin Trail (Alamere Falls), Tomales Point Trail, Drakes Estero Trail, and all other backcountry trails are closed to dogs per NPS rules. The adjoining Golden Gate NRA Northern District has additional dog-permitted trails: Bolinas Ridge Trail, Cross Marin Trail, Tomales Bay Trail (east side of Tomales Bay), Jewell Trail, McCurdy Trail, Randall Trail, and Giacomini Wetlands trails.

What is the only dog-friendly trail at Point Reyes?

Within the National Seashore, Kehoe Beach Trail (0.6 miles one-way, flat and easy) is the primary dog-permitted trail. It starts at Kehoe Beach parking area on Pierce Point Road, passes through Kehoe Marsh, and reaches the beach. Dogs must be on-leash throughout. Dogs are NOT allowed south of the trail from March 1 through September 30 due to snowy plover nesting.

Three ocean-facing beaches allow dogs, all leash-only: (1) Limantour Beach — from southeast of the parking lot to the beach adjacent to Coast Camp, approximately 2 miles. This is the best option. (2) Kehoe Beach — north of the trail only, reached by the 0.6-mile Kehoe Beach Trail. (3) Point Reyes/Great Beach — from the North Beach parking lot south to the historic Navy installation about a mile below the South Beach parking lot. Note: the snowy plover closure (March 1–September 30) shuts the stretch north of the North Beach parking lot, and the elephant seal closure (January–March) shuts the stretch south of the Navy installation. Important: the NPS Tomales Bay west-side beaches within the National Seashore have been closed to pets since May 30, 2023.

Two major seasonal closures. (1) Northern elephant seal season, January–March: per the NPS pet rules, dogs and people are excluded from the beach south of the historic Navy installation, roughly a mile south of the South Beach parking lot. (2) Western snowy plover nesting, March 1–September 30: dogs are prohibited on the beach south of the trail at Kehoe Beach and on the beach north of the North Beach parking lot. The best dog season is October–November, when neither closure is in effect.

October and November are optimal: minimal seasonal closures (post-plover, pre-elephant seal), mild weather, fewer crowds than summer, and all dog-accessible areas open. Avoid December–March (maximum closures from elephant seals) and June–August (maximum crowds and snowy plover closures).

Is Limantour Beach dog-friendly?

Partially. Dogs are allowed on the southeast side from the parking lot toward rocky areas (approximately 2 miles). Dogs are NOT allowed on Limantour Spit (west/northwest section). Must be on-leash (6 feet or less). December 15–March 31 may have elephant seal closures — verify before visiting. Limantour is the best dog beach at Point Reyes.

Is Point Reyes in a high Lyme disease tick area?

Accepted Answer

Moderate risk. Marin County has western black-legged ticks year-round with approximately 2–4% carrying Lyme disease bacteria. Peak tick seasons are spring (April–May) and fall (October–November). Use vet-recommended tick prevention before visiting, check your dog thoroughly immediately after the visit, and shower the dog within 2 hours of returning home.

Can my dog swim at Point Reyes beaches?

Accepted Answer

Use caution. Water temperature is very cold year-round (50–55°F), and rip currents are present especially at Limantour. Dogs can develop hypothermia quickly. Salt water can upset a dog's stomach. Supervised wading is acceptable, but extended swimming in the cold surf is not ideal. Rinse your dog with fresh water after any beach visit.

Can I bring my dog to the Point Reyes visitor center?

Accepted Answer

No. Dogs are not allowed in visitor center buildings (except service animals). Download maps and information from the NPS Point Reyes website (nps.gov/pore) before visiting. Rangers are available at trailheads during peak season for questions.
