Dogs must be on-leash throughout. Dogs are NOT allowed south of the trail from March 1 through September 30 due to snowy plover nesting.

(3) Point Reyes/Great Beach — from the North Beach parking lot south to the Navy installation about a mile below the South Beach parking lot. Note that the plover closure (March 1–September 30) shuts the stretch north of the North Beach parking lot, and the elephant seal closure (January–March) shuts the stretch south of the Navy installation. Tomales Bay west side: Kilkenny, Long Cove, Fruit Tree, Marshall, and other small beaches.

Moderate risk. Marin County has western black-legged ticks year-round with approximately 2–4% carrying Lyme disease bacteria. Peak tick seasons are spring (April–May) and fall (October–November). Use vet-recommended tick prevention before visiting, check your dog thoroughly immediately after the visit, and shower the dog within 2 hours of returning home.

Can my dog swim at Point Reyes beaches?

Use caution. Water temperature is very cold year-round (50–55°F), and rip currents are present especially at Limantour. Dogs can develop hypothermia quickly. Salt water can upset a dog's stomach. Supervised wading is acceptable, but extended swimming in the cold surf is not ideal. Rinse your dog with fresh water after any beach visit.

Can I bring my dog to the Point Reyes visitor center?

Accepted Answer

No. Dogs are not allowed in visitor center buildings (except service animals). Download maps and information from the NPS Point Reyes website (nps.gov/pore) before visiting. Rangers are available at trailheads during peak season for questions.
