Question 1

Can dogs be off-leash at Tilden Regional Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in undeveloped areas. Tilden Park (EBRPD) allows off-leash dogs under voice control in its undeveloped open space areas. Leashes are required on Nimitz Way (paved path), in the Little Farm area, at the Environmental Education Center, in picnic areas, and near developed park facilities. Check posted signs at each trailhead as the boundary between on-leash and off-leash areas varies.

Question 2

Can dogs swim at Lake Anza in Tilden Park?

Accepted Answer

No. EBRPD's swimming rules prohibit dogs on the beach and in the swim area at Lake Anza — there is no designated dog swim section. Dogs are welcome on Tilden's trails, and must be leashed in the developed areas around the lake. Lake Anza has also had recurring toxic blue-green algae closures, so keep dogs out of the water entirely and check EBRPD advisories before visiting.

Question 3

Are rattlesnakes a concern at Tilden Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Northern Pacific rattlesnakes are present at Tilden Park, most active May through September. They are typically found in rocky areas, brushy hillsides, and along sunny trail edges. Keep dogs on trails and away from rocks, logs, and dense brush. If your dog is bitten, do not apply a tourniquet — get to a veterinary emergency clinic immediately.

Question 4

When are foxtails a problem at Tilden Park?

Accepted Answer

Foxtail grass (Hordeum murinum and related species) is present late April through August in Tilden's grassland areas. Foxtail barbs can penetrate a dog's paw pads, nose, ears, eyes, and skin — requiring veterinary removal. Check your dog's entire body immediately after every visit during this period. Short-haired dogs get foxtails too — check between toes and in ear flaps carefully.

Question 5

Are ticks a problem at Tilden Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, year-round. Western black-legged ticks (which can carry Lyme disease), Pacific Coast ticks, and American dog ticks are all present at Tilden Park. Peak season is spring (March–May) and fall (September–November). Use veterinarian-recommended tick prevention before every visit and do a thorough tick check immediately after returning home.

Question 6

Is Nimitz Way on-leash at Tilden Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Nimitz Way, the wide paved trail in the Berkeley Hills portion of Tilden Park, requires dogs to be on-leash. It is a multi-use trail shared with cyclists and joggers. Off-leash dogs are not allowed on Nimitz Way at any time, regardless of voice control. The adjacent off-trail hillside areas may allow off-leash under voice control — check posted signs.

Question 7

Where do I park for Tilden Park?

Accepted Answer

Tilden Park has multiple free parking areas. The Nimitz Way parking lot is at the top of Nimitz Way in the Berkeley Hills (accessed via Grizzly Peak Boulevard). Lake Anza parking is near the swim area. The Little Farm area has separate parking. Parking is free throughout the park. Weekend mornings fill fast — arrive before 9 AM at popular areas.

Question 8

What is the best time to visit Tilden Park with a dog?

Accepted Answer

Fall (October–November) and spring (March–April) offer the most pleasant temperatures, lower foxtail risk, and fewer weekend crowds. Avoid summer afternoons (heat and foxtails). Winter visits are quieter but trails can be muddy. Morning visits (before 10 AM) beat weekend parking and crowd peaks at Lake Anza and Nimitz Way.
